Case Study: Ensuring Uninterrupted Power for NSW’s Emergency Call Centre

NSW emergency call centre UPS

The Client

A major emergency services organisation in New South Wales required an upgrade to its power infrastructure for its state call centre in Western Sydney. This facility handles every Triple Zero (000) ambulance call across the state, making it one of the most critical sites in the country.

With call volumes rising and infrastructure aging, the centre needed a new backup power system that could provide long runtime, full redundancy, and absolute reliability. STULZ Oceania was engaged to design and install a solution that would keep this vital service operational regardless of circumstances.

The Challenge

The client required a backup power system capable of providing a minimum of 4 hours of runtime for the entire call centre. The system had to be fully redundant, meaning that if one part failed, another could instantly take over. Due to the size and scale of the installation, the batteries also had to be split across several rooms. This made the design and installation more complex.

Moreover, there was also the challenge of storing so many batteries safely. This meant custom racks would have to be designed and installed to hold the weight and keep everything easy to access for maintenance.

The Solution

STULZ Oceania supplied and installed two CumulusPower® CP-600 UPS systems, working side by side to provide 1.2 megawatts of protected power. The setup included full N+N redundancy, which means that if one system ever fails, the other immediately takes over without any interruption.

Each UPS was paired with its own dedicated battery bank, designed for a long runtime. Together, they now provide more than 1,000 minutes of backup power, well over the required four hours. Then, custom racks were also built to hold the batteries securely and make them easy to service when needed.

Careful attention was paid to every cable and connection to ensure balanced load and consistent performance across the system. The result is a stable, safe, and reliable power setup designed to protect one of the state’s most important operations.

“This was one of the most technically demanding projects we’ve delivered,” said Leigh Anderson, Project Engineer at STULZ Oceania. “Every detail mattered, from the cable lengths to the layout of the racks. The result is a system that gives complete confidence in a truly critical environment.”
